On My Heart

Having a smile on your face doesn’t equal having peace. So many times we have a smile on our faces to mask pain or anguish. Lord knows I’ve done it.

So, Father God, I come before you now thanking you and praising you for who you are. Lord, I pray that you would remove the spirit of heaviness, despair, and the desire to give up. It is on my heart that someone needs a breakthrough RIGHT NOW.

Lord, someone reading this feels they cannot bear anymore bad news. Lord lift every burden. In fact, someone feels they are drowning and is questioning their reason to live. The blood of Jesus is against any feelings of suicide. Lord, this is urgent.

As I sit on this lightrail commuting to work, I know YOU can FIX what needs fixing. Lord touch us. Lord we need YOUR peace. Lord we need YOUR healing.

I just keep hearing DON’T GIVE UP on yourself, your dreams, and PLEASE DON’T GIVE UP ON GOD!!!

So, in the name of Jesus we decree and declare supernatural breakthroughs are here now.

Amen and Amen

Oakland’s 2nd Annual Black Joy Parade Experience!!! (2/24/19)

Soooo, I’m supposed to be getting ready for bed, however, I need to capture the raw emotion from yesterday’s Black Joy Parade experience.

Yesterday, February 24, 2019, I had the plum pleasing privilege to be apart of Oakland’s 2nd Annual Black Joy Parade with my amazing dance team aka my 100sUnit dance sisters.

I was really going to wait to write about my experience simply because I’M TIRED and the last few weeks wore ya girl OUT but reading an article from The Mercury News inspired me.

What is the Black Joy Parade?

Oakland did an amazing job bringing a positive experience where thousands celebrated our beautiful black heritage. Check out The Mercury News article Oakland’s 2nd annual Black Joy Parade celebrates energy, creativity, excellence for more great information and pictures about the awesome parade. Make plans to attend next year.

My AMAZINGLY talented 100sUnit dance sister Rochelle Westbrooks

So, as you can imagine, 100sunit came to represent our black girl magic and sisterhood; WE DID JUST THAT!! Check out our 100sunit Instagram page for more highlights.

Back to Rochelle Westrooks of CheNailsBeauty based in Sacramento, CA. The Mercury News photographer captured “Rochelle Westbrooks, of Sacramento, raises her arms as she dances during the Black Joy Parade in Oakland, Calif., on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)”

There is sooooo much more to Rochelle than the amazing nail designs she creates. This sista is TALENTED as she is a makeup artist, dancer, makes her own extraordinary costume/outfits and is a great mom. Don’t sleep on my sis Rochelle.

My 2019 BJP experience

Pictures are worth 1000 words so I’m going to let the pics share my experience. Check out pics from many of my 100sunit sisters shared on social media. These pics show my AMAZING experience at the 2019 Black Joy Parade.

Thank you Oakland for hosting such a powerful event for so many vendors, performers, and many more to celebrate OUR BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL. As usual, thank you Venetia James and Phyllis Cook who are the founders of 100sunit.com . Their creativity and choreography caused us to WIN for BEST OVERALL at yesterday’s parade.

Thank you to all those who made yesterday a BLACKIFUL day!!

The Essence of Leadership

In the past few years, I have become increasingly passionate about the topic of leadership and the importance of leadership development. Once I read Mark Sanborn’s book, “You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader,” my passion for leadership went from a flicker to a flame.

Definition of Leadership

Google defines leadership as, “the action of leading a group of people or an organization.” Although the Google definition provides general terms, it does not outline the attributes necessary for good leadership or the dangerous impact poor leadership has on an organization or faith-based ministry.

Let’s Talk About Leadership

“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He [She] is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.” President Ronald Reagan.

Just because a person holds a leadership (or management) position, DOES NOT mean they should. Amen to that! Sure they may “meet” or exceed the education and/or desired experience qualifications, but that does not equal good leadership.

Attributes of a Good Leader

  • Honesty
  • Creates conditions of trust
  • Good Communicator (actually speaks to and interacts with subordinates)
  • Courageous
  • Accountable
  • Exercises Emotional Intelligence
  • Innovative
  • Visionary
  • Strategic Planner
  • Leads by Example
  • Passion for a greater cause
  • Leads with influence, not control
  • Has Strong Interpersonal Skills
“One of the greatest accomplishments you can be paid as a leader is to have someone say that you have helped them be better than they thought they could be.” ~ Mark Sanborn

Are You a Leader?

According to John Quincy Adams, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, YOU ARE A LEADER.”

Leadership Resources

Final Thoughts

Thankfully, I have only encountered a low percentage of poor leadership/bad management in my 25+ years as a working adult.

Even though poor leadership didn’t create the healthiest or safest workplace environments, I realized I could benefit from their ineffective leadership. Yep, I began to study their ineffectiveness to teach me what NOT TO DO. #PerspectiveShift

Not only did I learn what not to do, I eventually created a consulting business that will be instrumental in creating good leaders who will have the tools and skillset to positively influence change.

Just get started

When I think of how many accomplishments I missed out on simply because I was waiting for everything to be perfect, I get mad at myself. Like this blog, I have started blogs twice before several years ago, but never published them because I was “waiting” for them to be perfect before I hit PUBLISH. Don’t wait for the “perfect opportunity” or “perfect product.” JUST GET STARTED!!!
