Need a Maya Angelou Quote as a Pick-Me-Up?

Why not add Maya Angelou Quotes as a quick pick-me-up? Are you, too, feeling a bit overwhelmed or creatively stifled by the 24/7 discussions regarding this coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19)? Well, you’re NOT ALONE. Of course, I’m interested in the latest developments, data, press conferences, state and federal guidelines, etc. I’m simply feeling information overload. Gee whizz!

I had to stop myself from reading tons of articles and watching every press conference about this virus. It was time to fill my cup with something to ignite my creative fire.

Maya Angelou Quote

Keep It Fresh

As a blogger who LOVES to write content, lately I’ve struggled with WHAT TO POST. Prior to all this outbreak stuff, I had pre-scheduled (automated) blogs and social media posts with interesting and funny write ups but now I decided to delay the postings. Why? My reason for delaying the posts are to be sure I’m being sensitive to those directly impacted by the outbreak in any way.

Inspirational Topics

When I have writer’s block or need added substance for a writing project, I go to YouTube or Google to search topics like inspirational leadership, journaling, self-care, mindset habits or similar keywords. Several videos gave me a little inspiration, but something I saw reminded me of a Maya Angelou quote that has consistently encouraged me over the years. The thought of this ONE particular quote is the leading inspiration behind THIS post. It was difficult to post a few Maya quotes. She left us with so much of her profound wisdom. So, I just wanted to share a few of my favorites to help fulfill your inspirational needs.

Maya Angelou’s Inspirational Quotes

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”

“Nothing will work unless you do.’

“Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.”

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget HOW you made them feel.”

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”

“I’m a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that’s me.”

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

“I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision.”

“Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.”

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

We all need to be mindful of what is going on in our world to stay informed and healthy. In the midst of challenging times, let’s inspire one another to keep a positive mindset. Hopefully, these Maya Angelou quotes added a rainbow to your cloud. Do you have a favorite Maya Angelou quote?

2 Most Common Job Seeker Mistakes

To get you closer to the job you are pursuing, there are common mistakes to avoid when creating your resume and cover letter. According to CareerBuilder, candidates are encouraged to spend extra time when it comes to all aspects of the hiring process by avoiding simple, yet common, mistakes.

The job market is highly competitive, which means it is crucial for job seekers to avoid common pitfalls. You don’t want a simple typo to be the reason a hiring manager does not consider you “worthy” of an interview. According to, “…the average recruiter or hiring manager spends 6 seconds reading a resume.” So, it is important that you make a lasting impression and avoid your resume landing in the “rejected” pile. I think spelling errors and poorly formatted resumes are common knowledge so we won’t spend any time on that topic. I’m assuming you know misspelled words and a poorly formatted resume, right? I hope your answer is yes.

Take a look at the following common mistakes to be sure you avoid making them:

Mistake #1: Too Much Information in Your Resume

It is important to introduce yourself to the employer through your resume without including 20 years of work history. The hiring manager should be able to do a quick overview to identify your skills as they related to the job. Less is more. Unless you are applying for a senior level executive job, you should be able to keep your resume between one to two pages.

Mistake #2: Not Customizing Your Resume For Each Employer

According to the CareerBuilder,” No two jobs are exactly alike, and the resumes you submit should not either.” You want to avoid submitting a “one-size-fits-all” resume where the qualifications listed do not match the job description. The goal is to make your resume memorable to hiring managers who have the task of reviewing hundreds of resumes.

For example, if you are applying for a legal secretary position, then it may not be necessary to list your previous job as a general laborer unless the desirable qualifications align. According to a 2016 National Survey conducted by The Harris Poll, “54 percent of job seekers don’t customize their resume for each employer.” So, when writing your targeted resume, be sure to list key words from the job description.

It is important that you spend time outlining your skills with the job description to help move your resume to the top of the pile. A hiring manager is reading your resume with a “what’s in it for us” mindset. In most cases, your resume is the first impression a potential employer will have of you, so make it a good first impression. Job searching can be overwhelming, but it is necessary for you to obtain your ideal position.

Sure it takes more time to review each job description and write a customized resume and cover letter, but remember you have an average of 6 seconds to catch the attention of a hiring manager or recruiter to make a great first impression and hopefully land an interview.

Get To Steppin’

When you are experiencing rough patches in life and you find yourself feeling ‘SOME TYPE OF WAY’, maybe you just need to go outside for a walk; a prayer walk. There is natural beauty that surrounds us that we often overlook. When is the last time you stopped to smell the roses?

prayer walk is an activity that consists of walking and praying at the same time. It’s done not for the physical benefit but for the spiritual exercise, either publicly functioning also as a demonstration or rally (to let other people know the group is praying), or quietly in sight of the subject. For instance, a person or group may be praying for a town or city, and walk the streets of the city while praying, either out loud, or in silence.

Earlier this week, I was at work feeling a bit BLAH. Nothing major was going on, but I could tell that I needed to shift my perspective with the few things on my mind. Like I said in a previous post, I just wasn’t feeling it; I needed some motivation. Sunshine and a 30-minute walk was all the motivation I needed. So, I put on my super cute teal Adidas tennis shoes and GOT TO STEPPIN’. Too bad I “misplaced” my FitBit because I could have tracked my steps.

Can’t you just hear the sounds from the waterfall? Location: State Capitol’s Rose Garden
(Sacramento, CA)
Such a beautiful day to sit and
BREATHE in the fresh air

I walked out the building thinking I would just walk around the block a few times, but once I got outside those doors, I started talking to my heavenly father. I started praying to thank God for the ability to walk and see the natural beauty around me. Yes, I talked to Him about the things on my mind, but then I got right back to thanking Him and praising Him for HIS grace and mercy. Anyway, my fingers are starting to type fast thinking about all I said to my Lord and Savior.

Anyway, back to my walk. The California State Capitol is located a few blocks from where I work. If I am walking with someone, I will walk around the capitol and back to work. Since I was by myself and praying, I decided to stop and SMELL THE ROSES — literally. When I was finished praying, I had to take pictures to share. Yes, I took this phone on my Samsung Galaxy. Shoutout to Android users. No disrespect to iPhone users, but I had to give my fellow Androiders some love.

Take time to smell the roses

Have you ever been to the California State Capitol and walked through the Rose Garden located on 15th and Capitol? It’s so beautiful and a wonderful place to create happy memories. People have gotten married, engaged, taken engagement and graduation photos at this beautiful location.

Psychologists studying how exercise relieves anxiety and depression suggest that a 10-minute walk may be just as good as a 45-minute workout.

A bench is located in the center of the Rose Garden

I enjoyed 10 minutes to just breathe and enjoy the sun shining on my face as I sat on a bench by the roses.

Would you do yourself a favor by doing prayer walks, especially instead of allowing stress to consume you? I am talking to myself as well. Get to steppin’.

On the walk back to work, I decided to be intentional about getting out for fresh air and a prayer walk. Do you go for prayer walks? What do you do to help improve your mood or relieve stress?

The Process Isn’t Pretty

The process of building something new and amazing doesn’t look beautiful in the PROCESS.

Don’t quit because things aren’t how you want.

Don’t quit because your life, relationship, career, etc is not what you had hoped.

Your life isn’t over, it’s just UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
