Need a Maya Angelou Quote as a Pick-Me-Up?

Why not add Maya Angelou Quotes as a quick pick-me-up? Are you, too, feeling a bit overwhelmed or creatively stifled by the 24/7 discussions regarding this coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19)? Well, you’re NOT ALONE. Of course, I’m interested in the latest developments, data, press conferences, state and federal guidelines, etc. I’m simply feeling information overload. Gee whizz!

I had to stop myself from reading tons of articles and watching every press conference about this virus. It was time to fill my cup with something to ignite my creative fire.

Maya Angelou Quote

Keep It Fresh

As a blogger who LOVES to write content, lately I’ve struggled with WHAT TO POST. Prior to all this outbreak stuff, I had pre-scheduled (automated) blogs and social media posts with interesting and funny write ups but now I decided to delay the postings. Why? My reason for delaying the posts are to be sure I’m being sensitive to those directly impacted by the outbreak in any way.

Inspirational Topics

When I have writer’s block or need added substance for a writing project, I go to YouTube or Google to search topics like inspirational leadership, journaling, self-care, mindset habits or similar keywords. Several videos gave me a little inspiration, but something I saw reminded me of a Maya Angelou quote that has consistently encouraged me over the years. The thought of this ONE particular quote is the leading inspiration behind THIS post. It was difficult to post a few Maya quotes. She left us with so much of her profound wisdom. So, I just wanted to share a few of my favorites to help fulfill your inspirational needs.

Maya Angelou’s Inspirational Quotes

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”

“Nothing will work unless you do.’

“Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.”

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget HOW you made them feel.”

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”

“I’m a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that’s me.”

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

“I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision.”

“Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.”

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

FINAL THOUGHT

We all need to be mindful of what is going on in our world to stay informed and healthy. In the midst of challenging times, let’s inspire one another to keep a positive mindset. Hopefully, these Maya Angelou quotes added a rainbow to your cloud. Do you have a favorite Maya Angelou quote?

Self-Care: 15 Ways To Take Better Care of Yourself

Self-Care is Vital

Self-care is more than “treating yourself.” It is showing yourself some love and recognizing that you need to take care of YOURSELF. According to Life Hacker, Self-care helps prevent burnout, reduces negative psychological and physical effects of stress and helps you refocus on what is true and important.

Are you feeling overwhelmed at work or stressed about the overdue tasks piling up at home? Well, that may be a sign that it is time for you to indulge in a big dose of self-care. Self-care is not a buzzword or a movement, it is vital to your mental and physical well-being.

Definition of Self-Care

Self-care is defined as,” the practice of taking action to preserve one’s own health or the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.” (Source: Dictionary.com)

BENEFITS of practicing self-care

  • Reduces negative effects of stress
  • Better productivity
  • Enhances self-esteem
  • Better physical health
  • Improves quality of life
  • Improves resistance to disease
  • Helps you refocus

While there are many benefits to self-care, it is one of the first things to be overlooked or “put on the back-burner” when life becomes busy. There is a long comprehensive list of self-care ideas, but many of those ideas are tips that only take a few minutes.

SELF-CARE IDEAS

Here are just a few self-care ideas for you to incorporate into your busy life:

  1. Spend time outdoors
  2. Do mindfulness breathing exercises
  3. Listen to music that makes you smile
  4. Do journal writing or make a gratitude list
  5. Sip on hot herbal tea
  6. Watch funny animal videos
  7. Disconnect from social media for the day
  8. Do a crossword puzzle or mindless coloring
  9. Read the bible or positive affirmations
  10. Take a hot bubble bath

There may not be a lot of time, but MAKE TIME. It doesn’t have to cost money to take a few moments out to show yourself some love or to give yourself a mental health break. The goal is to exercise self-care before you reach the level of BURNOUT, if possible.

It is so important to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself. There are times when we are so busy caring for the needs of others, that we find ourselves depleted. The fact is, if you gives others EVERYTHING you have, and then you have nothing left to give yourself or anyone else. Be kind to yourself.

TAKE ACTION

Don’t wait until the perfect time on the perfect day. Get started right away. Which self-care ideas are you going to put into action right away?

She Believed

In case you didn’t already know, I was one of the featured authors in the She Believed Volume III book anthology just released on September 28, 2019. This is the 2nd published book anthology where my writing was featured.

My chapter in the She Believed Volume III Book Anthology is titled,” Divorce Yesterday’s Pain, Marry Tomorrow’s Promise.” Writing a glimpse of my story was an emotional yet rewarding opportunity. My story discusses love, pain, disappointment, healing, and wisdom gained. The writing process forced me to push beyond the fear of judgment to unapologetically share my truth.

In the midst of my life’s challenges, I never imagined God would use my pain and disappointments for His glory. God is so faithful.

Excerpt from page. 65.

“All I know is there was purpose in my pain, and there is purpose in your pain. Lord knows there have been times I’ve asked God, “why me?” Each painful experience had me feeling ‘some type of way’ towards God. I’m just keeping it real. I was angry at God. Why would He allow me to experience such deep pain?”

Have you ever experienced emotional or physical pain that it had you wondering what you had done to deserve it? I sure did.

Sharing your story to one person can be scary, but sharing your story inside a book without having control over who reads it  is insanely scary. I am proud of myself and the other authors who allowed ourselves to be vulnerable for our own healing and potentially to help inspire the healing of others. However, this anthology is proof that myself and 10 others were unapologetic, determined, and fearless in sharing our pursuit of destiny. If we did it, so can you.

It is my hope that you will purchase this book for yourself or someone else. You just never know how this book will bless someone else who may be experiencing challenges and cannot see beyond their pain. Reading the stories of real life women who have overcome may be just what the “doctor” ordered.

Be inspired to think outside the box

Have you ever received a text from your friend or penpal asking if you are “drawing inside or outside the lines?” I have received such a text. Basically, this pal was asking if I am taking my own advice like what I shared during a previous interview with host Chundria Brownlow’s podcast on the topic, “Stepping Boldly Outside of Comfort Zones.” Of course, I’m taking my own advice. Well, not right away, but then I hit a bump in the road and have to remember what I would advise a client or friend.

Anyway, I got to thinking about a few quotes that have inspired me to color outside the lines or think outside the box. So, check out a few encourage you to think outside the box, color outside the lines, or move beyond your comfort zone to create your own opportunities.

Outside the box inspirational quotes:

  1. “But out of limitations comes creativity.” ~ Debbie Allen
  2. “When opportunities were not presented to me, I was INSPIRED to CREATE my own opportunities.” ~ Bianca LaTrice
  3. “It always seems impossible, until it’s done.” ~ Nelson Mandela
  4. “In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.” ~ Unknown
  5. “Our only limitations are those we set up in our own minds.” ~ Napoleon Hill
  6. “Now to HIM who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to HIS power that is at work within us.” ~ Ephesians 3:20 (New International Version Bible)
  7. “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.” ~ Former First Lady Michelle Obama

So, whether you refer to the phrase as thinking outside the box or coloring outside the lines, just don’t allow fear to keep you stuck in your comfort zone.

Good Night.

Men, we NEED you!

Oscar-nominated director and filmmaker John Singleton died this past Monday after having suffered a massive stroke on April 17, 2019. Gosh, darn it!!! Another loss of an influential black man. There are conversations surrounding the topic of ” high blood pressure -HBD or Hypertension- in African Americans [particulartly our black men – our brothas].

Rest in Peace to Filmmaker John Singleton GettyImages

While scrolling through my Instagram , I came across a nbcnews.com article titled, “John Singleton’s family urges black men to get their blood pressure checked.” I didn’t realize John had been silently dealing with HBD. I know a little about HBD since I have a couple family members who deal with it. Well, after reading the article, maybe I do know more people, but maybe they, too, are dealing with it silently.

I realize that people have different reasons why they don’t go to the doctor, but the fact that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is quoted as saying, “African American men are at [the] greatest risk of having a stroke at a younger age.” Brothas, your families need you, your children need you, OUR community needs you to live a long, healthy and prosperous life. Men, we NEED you!!! So, please don’t put off going to the doctor for checkups and please take your prescribed medicines. With that said, I am a HUGE supporter of holistic and alternative medicines, so go have a consultation and checkups by a naturopath provider. Whatever you do, please TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH!!

By the way, I feel inclined to mention that I am not placing any judgment on John because much of what has been reported about how he treated his HBD has been a bit of speculation combined with information shared by his family. I appreciate John’s family, in the midst of their grief, spreading awareness about the condition, also known as the “silent killer.”

I encourage EVERYONE, regardless of race, socio-economic background, or gender, to take care of yourself to the best of your ability; I am talking to myself as well. According to CDC, “High blood pressure affects 1 in 3 adults in the United States.”

Rest in peace John Singleton.

To learn more on the deadly impact of high blood pressure in African American men, please take a look at the CDC publication PDF (A Closer Look at African American Men and High Blood Pressure Control .
